Spent about an hour on the phone with my bank and Apple organizing my PowerBook purchase. The nice guy from Apple was very surprised that he was able to charge my card so quickly, but in a good way. He wasn't so sure that it'd ship soon, though, because it was “backordered” and might be “a couple of weeks”.

So I was pleasantly surprised to receive a shipment notification a few minutes ago. I think my PowerBook is ready to ship. The email I got from Apple is a little confusing…

Dear Apple Customer,

The following products shipped on 06/05/2002.

as if 06/05/2002 is a date in the past!? Weird. They did provide that essential piece of information: a FedEx tracking number. I'm hopeful that I'll get it in time for me to set it up for MacHack.

I've made several changes to my irssi theme since yesterday: it's now up to version 1.0.5. Please download a new copy if you haven't already done so, it's much better now. Still some more work to do, but it covers most channel operations in a visually pleasing and efficient fashion.

If you prefer a black background, to my surprise I discovered it looks just as good as with a white background.

Spent several hours today setting up a new LCD iMac and OS X to mount NFS home directories, read user accounts from NIS, and authenticate via Kerberos. Worked great, I went to dinner, came back, and it was dead. Window Server would die several seconds after login. Mark and I were able to resucitate it eventually—by upgrading it to Mac OS X 10.1.5! We only thought of it after almost an hour of uninstalling today's new components.

If you've got an account on the ACM cluster here at the U of I, drop into the ACM office and try logging into the iMac on the desk just inside the door (where the Ultra 5 used to be, and the Ultra 1 before that). It should work now.

One of my referers today was someone who searched Google for “busboy jobs”. I'm #1. Sorry to disappoint—maybe Brent would have a better idea. :-)
